First Capitol Building was erected in 1822. B.M. Hines had the contract for this building. the building was two stories and measured 30 x 40 feet, on the north-east corner of Capitol and President streets. Materials found in the vicinity were used in the construction and resembled a residence in appearance with chimneys at either end and wooden shutters at each window.
In 1828 the town of Jackson was visited by General Andrew Jackson who was campaigning for president. General Jackson spoke to the Legislature on January 20th, 1828 . The Legislature operated in this building until 1838 when they moved to the New Capitol Building (Old Capitol Building now) before it was completely finished.
